Tain - Air Weapons Range
The bombing ranges at Tain was established in the 1950s on the site of an earlier airfield used during the Second World War.
Containing an important and fragile dune landscape, the site was used extensively during the Balkan campaign to train NATO aircrews and today contains a potemkin village used for bombing training complete with fake cars, a church, civilians and homes.
“Tain Air Weapons range consists of approximately 1100 hectares of low-lying salt marsh and scrub. Much of the range is underwater at high water, the remainder being bog and grassland. The entire site is covered by environmental protections and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Although military training is the primary land use, the estate is also used for grazing.”
